
It is often hard to tell what to do in a life or death situation. Each instance of suicide and mental health issues is different and should be approached with great caution. While each instance may be different, we would like to provide some possible steps that may help you or someone you know who is dealing with thoughts of suicide.
- Have meaningful social connections
[Social connections have been proven to help us live longer, happier, and more stable lives. It is important to remember that the quality of one’s relationships is often more important than the quantity.] - Find a mentor or become one
[Mentorship can be beneficial for both the mentor and the mentee. - Support Groups – Having a group of people that are going through similar issues, helps to know you are someone else is not alone.
- Finding joy or excitement in something – Being able to turn your attention to something healthy: exercise, friendships, etc
- Voicing what the issue is: Do not bottle things in
What to avoid
- Trying to cheer the person up by telling them everything is okay and it’s all in their head or tell them to snap out of it.
- Assuming the situation will take care of itself.
- Being sworn to secrecy.
- Leaving the person alone, unless they act in a threatening way. Then, leave and call 911.
